The name "Surabaya" came from a folklore which tells about a bloody fight between a some sort of a shark (Sura) and a crocodile (Baya). The fight was on a river which is now has a bridge over it called Jembatan Merah (Red Bridge). In memory of their fight, they built a monument just in front of the Surabaya Zoo.
